The most widely used measure for characterizing modal nature of information transmission is Error Rate.

Error rate is the probability Pe that a symbol at the sink is not the symbol W emitted at the information source.

Pe is also called 'symbol' Error Rate and Pb is called 'bit' Error Rate. Typically

Determining the Error Rate is difficult but the 'lower bound' of Pe can be determined using Fano's inequality.
